Russia says it has taken back about 63% of Ukrainian-held territory in the Kursk region

Russian forces have retaken 63.2% of territory seized by Ukraine in the Kursk region of western Russia, the Russian Defense Ministry said.

It said Russian troops had retaken four settlements in the first two weeks of January.

In a surprise attack on August 6 last year, Ukrainian troops crossed the border and captured large swathes of the region, giving Kiev a valuable bargaining chip in potential talks to end the war. The offensive began strongly but Moscow recently retook about half of the occupied territory with the help of North Korean troops.

Kiev then launched a second incursion into the region earlier this month.
