USA again the most important trading partner in Germany

After nine years, the United States was again the most important trading partner in Germany last year. In 2024, foreign trade turnover of EUR 252.8 billion (sum of exports and imports) was achieved. China was in second place with a foreign trade turnover of 246.3 billion euros. This emerges from current figures from the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis). While sales with the United States increase by 0.1% annually, the trade with China decreased by 3.1% compared to 2023. This was mainly due to the falling exports to China. The Netherlands followed in place with exports and imports worth 205.7 billion euros.

Most German exports have been going to the United States since 2015. In 2024, goods worth around 161.4 billion euros were exported there, which corresponds to an increase of 2.2%. The number of imports from the United States, on the other hand, decreased by 3.4% and most recently was EUR 91.4 billion. The German foreign trade in the USA achieved an export surplus of EUR 70.0 billion.
