White House Correspondents Association Chairman Weijia Jiang addressing reporters
Weijia Jiang, president of the White House Correspondents’ Association, said in emotional remarks from the stage that Trump would hold a briefing at the White House.
“I said earlier tonight that journalism is a public service, because when there’s an emergency, we run toward the crisis, not away from it. And on a night when we’re thinking about the freedoms in the First Amendment, we should also think about how fragile they are.” “We would do this again,” he said.
The White House Correspondents’ Association Dinner is organized by the association that ensures media access to the President.
The White House Correspondents’ Association works independently of the White House.

Trump said in a social media post, “The shooter has been caught.”
Trump posted on Truth Social that a shooter had been captured at the reporters’ dinner.
“The DC Secret Service and law enforcement did a fantastic job one evening. They acted quickly and bravely. The shooter has been captured, and I have recommended that we ‘let the show go on’ but will be guided solely by law enforcement,” he wrote in a post.
He said, “They will make a decision soon. Regardless of that decision, the evening will be very different from the plan, and we will obviously have to do it again.”
This is the first time that Trump is attending the event after boycotting it in previous years.

Trump said he was not injured
Trump and the first lady were escorted off the stage by Secret Service agents just minutes into the annual White House correspondents’ dinner.
There is no news of anyone being injured, journalists say Trump is safe. A law enforcement official told The Associated Press that a shooter opened fire.
Secret Service and other officials swarmed the banquet hall of the Washington Hilton as hundreds of guests huddled under tables.
“Get out of the way sir!” Someone shouted. Others screamed for silence.
The annual event is a celebration of press freedom, but has come under scrutiny due to strained relations between the Trump administration and the media.
