Despite the shooting incident, King Charles III heads to Washington, D.C.
Britain’s King Charles III and Queen Camilla are planning a four-day visit to Washington, DC and other locations to celebrate the 250th anniversary of US independence and the US-UK “special relationship”.
His state visit, scheduled from Monday to Thursday, came after a shooting at a dinner attended by President Donald Trump prompted a last-minute security review of the trip.
Buckingham Palace said the king was “very relieved to hear that the President, the First Lady and all guests were unharmed.” After the review, the palace said the trip “will proceed as planned.”
The stakes of Charles’s visit were already high due to the volatile “special relationship” between the US and Britain in recent months.
Trump has repeatedly attacked British Prime Minister Keir Starmer for not getting involved in the US-Israeli war over Iran, dismissing the UK leader as “not Winston Churchill”, the World War II prime minister who coined the phrase “special relationship” to describe the US-UK bond.
As monarch, Charles is expected to remain above politics and represent Britain, but not speak for its government.

Elon Musk and Sam Altman’s bitter feud is headed to court
Tech giants Elon Musk and Sam Altman are set to face off in court on Monday in a case centering on the transition of OpenAI, a company that prioritized making money over public service.
Altman and Musk founded OpenAI in 2015. The company released its artificial intelligence-powered chatbot, ChatGPT, in 2022.
Musk alleges that OpenAI CEO Altman broke the company’s founding statement by violating its motto of “benefiting all of humanity, unconstrained by the need to generate financial returns.”
Altman and OpenAI have dismissed Musk’s allegations as a baseless case of sour grapes, aimed at undermining OpenAI’s rapid growth and bolstering Musk’s own AI venture, XAI, which he plans to launch in 2023.
Musk left OpenAI in 2018 after internal disputes.

The suspect in the reporters’ dinner shooting is expected to be formally charged on Monday
A suspect in Saturday night’s shooting at the White House correspondents dinner has been identified as a teacher and engineer from California.
The alleged gunman is expected to be indicted on Monday on two preliminary charges, including using a firearm during the commission of a crime of violence and assaulting a federal officer using a dangerous weapon, according to Jeanine Pirro, U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia.
The high-profile dinner, attended by President Donald Trump and other senior members, honors journalism each year.
This was the first time Trump was attending the event as president. They were escorted off the stage as guests ducked under tables amid loud bangs, later confirmed to be gunshots.
The motive of the alleged shooter is not clear.
