Before leading Friday’s meeting, Chinese President Xi Jinping and US President Donald Trump spent about 10 minutes in the gardens of the Zhongnanhai complex, a former imperial garden that houses the offices of Chinese leaders.

Passing by the green columns and archways, Trump remarked, “These are the most beautiful roses I have ever seen.”

Trump said the two leaders had made “great trade deals,” without giving details.

More emphasis is expected on trade in Friday’s meeting.

US Trade Representative Jameson Greer, who was attending Friday’s meeting, told Bloomberg TV on Friday that it has not yet been decided whether to extend the US-China trade truce beyond the end of this year.

In late 2025, the US suspended massive tariff increases on Chinese goods, while China eased export restrictions on rare earths.

According to Reuters news agency, Greer said deals have been finalized on Chinese purchases of agricultural goods, beef and Boeing planes.

He also said progress had been made on setting up mechanisms to manage future trade, with both sides expected to identify $30 billion (€26 billion) of non-sensitive items.

Smaller delegations are also joining Xi and Trump on Friday.

The Chinese delegation included Chinese Ambassador to the United States Xie Feng; Cai Qi, Director of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China; Foreign Minister Wang Yi; Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs Ma Zhaoxu and Vice Premier of the State Council He Lifeng.

Also, US Trade Representative Greer, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth, Treasury Secretary Scott Besant, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US Ambassador to China David Perdue have also joined Trump.
