Iran says it is ready to ‘teach a lesson’ if attacked

After US President Donald Trump warned that the ceasefire in the Middle East was “on life support”, Iran’s Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf said his country’s military was ready to “teach a lesson” to any aggressor.

“Our armed forces are ready to respond to any aggression and teach a lesson,” Qalibaf said on X.

“Bad strategy and bad decisions always have bad consequences. The world already understands this,” he said.

In another post several hours later, Qalibaf said Washington had “no choice” but to accept Iran’s 14-point peace proposal.

He wrote, “Any other approach would be completely inconclusive; nothing but one failure after another.”

“The longer they drag their feet, the more American taxpayers will pay for it.”

Donald Trump’s rejection of the Iran proposals has raised concerns that hostilities with Iran could be rekindled, further destabilizing global energy markets already in chaos due to the war.

Trump rejects Iran’s proposal, calls ceasefire ‘on life support’

US President Donald Trump said the ceasefire with Iran was “on life support” after dismissing Tehran’s latest response to a US peace proposal as “completely inappropriate”.

Asked about the status of the ceasefire on Monday, Trump told reporters, “After reading the garbage they sent us, I would call it the weakest right now. I haven’t even finished reading it.”

“The ceasefire is largely on life support, where doctors come in and say, ‘Sir, your loved one has about a one percent chance of survival,'” the US president said.

In its response issued on Sunday, Tehran called for an end to the war on all fronts including Lebanon, demanded compensation for war damages and asserted its sovereignty over the Strait of Hormuz.

Iran also called on the US to end its naval blockade, guarantee no further attacks, lift sanctions, and lift restrictions on the sale of Iranian oil.

Washington had proposed ending the fighting as a precursor to talks on more contentious issues, including Iran’s nuclear program.

Welcome to DW’s ongoing coverage of the conflict in the Middle East.

On Sunday, Iran issued its response to Washington’s proposal to reopen talks.

In it, Tehran called for an end to the war on all fronts, including Lebanon, where Israel – a US ally – is fighting Iran-backed Hezbollah militants.

However, this response was immediately rejected by US President Donald Trump on Monday, as the two sides remained far apart on a number of issues.

Stay tuned for more news and analysis.
