Online trade is adding in the first quarter

The online trade continues to recover. This emerges from current results of the BEVH. The total sales with the online sale of goods had 19.7 billion euros in the first quarter. This corresponds to an increase of 3.2%, measured by the previous year. For the first time in 2022, e-commerce has grown more than inflation, according to the BevH. “After the roller coaster ride of the past few years-the high during the Corona period and the subsequent slide with the outbreak of the war in Ukraine-sales are currently 17.5 percent above the comparative value of 2019.”

The online trade with shoes had a positive development: Here, total sales rose by 5.8% to EUR 918 million, after EUR 868 million in the first quarter of 2024. In the clothing sector, sales were increased by 3.9% to EUR 3.5 billion in the first quarter. Thus, the cluster, which includes the areas, recorded a total of 4.3% to 4.3%.

In particular, online marketplaces (+5.1%) and the D2C business of some brands (+6.7%) were able to benefit from the increased demand. Classic online shops grew comparatively little by 1.2%. MultiChannel dealers even recorded a minus by 0.4%with their web shops.

“The upward trend gives hope, even if consumers were unsettled by the global political events at short notice,” commented Martin Groß-Albenhausen, deputy general manager of the BEVH. “The Germans have put a lot of money on hand – it is now the task of the new government to maintain the purchasing power despite the trade wars.
