America was then entangled in Vietnam war
In the 1960s, America was deeply entangled in the Vietnam War. US President Johnson wanted his allies to support this war. Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson was strongly against this war. Canada suggested peace talks in Vietnam, which was against America’s aggressive policy.
Canadian Prime Minister criticizes America in a speech
Pearson criticized the US in a speech, in which he said that America should gradually remove its army from Vietnam. A diplomatic solution should be found. Johnson got very angry at this speech because he wanted Canada to fully support America.
On 29 April 1965, Canadian Prime Minister Lester Pearson Washington D.C. Were Pirson knew that his speech could offend the US President, but he hoped that he could discuss the subject with Johnson.

Angry pushed towards the wall
Pearson was called to meet Johnson at the White House. Johnson was already angry. When Pearson reached the Oval Office of the White House, in the midst of the conversation, Johnson suddenly grabbed him and pushed him towards the wall. Then said very angry:
“You don’t come into my damn backyard and piss on my rug.” (Meaning: “You cannot come to my house and urinate on my carpet!”)
Pearson was shocked, Johnson kept shouting
Pearson was surprised by this attack. Come in Johnson kept screaming staring at them. His speech was described as ‘stupid and derogatory’. Prime Minister Pearson was 69 years old at that time. He was a calm leader by nature. He tried to calm Johnson somehow. Said that he was only suggesting to establish peace, not criticizing America.
Canada – Tension increased in America
However, after this incident, Tensions in Canada and America increased for some time. Johnson was infamous for his angry and aggressive tendency. He used to adopt a strategy called “The Johnson Treatment”, in which he tried to intimidate his opponents with physical pressure and threatening. Long stature of height often scared others using his height (6 feet 4 inches) and a huge body.
Pearson did not make it a dispute
This incident suggests how aggressive and rude Johnson could have been intoxicated by power. However, Pearson never made it publicly disputed, due to which the matter did not increase much. This is one of the events of American history where a President crossed all the limitations of etiquette in showing his displeasure.
Johnson spoke indecently to ministers and staff
Johnson spoke abusive language with his employees and ministers. Often used abuses like “Goddamn,” “Bullshit,” and “Son of a Bitch”. He had made a habit of talking to his staff while sitting in the toilet, which was considered extremely rude and disgruntling.
Poor behavior of other American presidents
Other American presidents also treated other national leaders in different contexts, insulting, insensitive, or threatened.
1. Richard Nixon and Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi (1971)
– Nixon used contempt language towards Indira Gandhi. Tried to pressurize India not to attack Pakistan. His conversation with his National Security Advisor Henry Kisser also recorded the use of derogatory words for Gandhi.
Nixon called Indira Gandhi as “Witch” (witch) “and” old bitch “(old bitch) during the Indo-Pakistan war. Call India a “dirty country” and “country of beggars”. These things came to light from his secret White House Recording (which became public in 2005).
2. George W. Bush and German Chancellor Angela Merkel (2006)
Once Bush suddenly put his hand on Merkel’s shoulders during the G8 conference, causing her uncomfortable. At that time many people found this action strange and wrong.
3. Barack Obama and Russia President Dimitri Medvedev (2012)
Obama said in an off-the-riddled conversation with Medvedev that “he can show more flexibility with Putin” if he is re-elected. This statement later caused controversy.
4. John F. Kennedy and Soviet leader Nikita Khrushchev (1961)
During the Vienna summit, there was a fierce conversation between Kennedy and Khrushchev. The situation of Tu-Tu-Main-Main came between the two. Kennedy later admitted that this meeting was very difficult for him.
Kennedy used abuses and threats to hide a sex scandal in the White House. It is said about him that he used to talk to women employees in extremely indecent language.
5. Theodore Roosevelt (1901-1909)
The basic mantra of Roosevelt’s foreign policy was “Speak slowly, but keep the stick in your hand.” He used an angry and violent language in his speeches.
